This guide was created to walk you through what to expect before, during, and after your first massage experience at Heights Wellness Retreat. Before Your Appointment: Setting the Stage for Relaxation
Ask Questions When You Book
When scheduling your first massage, feel free to ask as many questions as you need. This is your experience, and we’re here to tailor it to your preferences and goals. Whether you’re curious about the difference between Swedish and deep tissue massage, wondering which enhancements are right for you, or looking for a recommendation based on a specific concern—just ask. Our Guest Experience Team is happy to help.
You should also ask about:
- Session duration options (60, 90, or 120 minutes)
- Specialized modalities like prenatal, sports recovery, or relaxation-focused massage
- Enhancements like aromatherapy, hot stone, or cupping
- Cancellation or rescheduling policies
Remember, there’s no such thing as a silly question. The more you know, the more comfortable you’ll feel walking into your first session.
Getting Ready: A Few Simple Pre-Visit Tips
To help you feel fully prepared (and comfortable), consider the following before your appointment:
1. Arrive Early
Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early. This gives you time to check in, complete any wellness intake forms, and begin to relax before your session begins. If it’s your first time, we’ll ask you to share a bit about your health history, goals, and any concerns we should be aware of. This information ensures that your therapist can provide a safe, customized experience.
2. Turn Off Your Phone
Your massage is your time to unplug and be present. Silencing your phone (or turning it off entirely) will prevent interruptions and help you stay focused on your well-being.
3. Remove Jewelry and Dress Comfortably
Leave jewelry at home or remove it before your session begins, especially necklaces, watches, or large earrings that may interfere with your comfort. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy changing before and after your massage.
4. Men: Shave Before a Facial Massage
If you plan to receive a facial massage or combine your session with a skin therapy treatment, we recommend shaving the day of your appointment to get the most from the treatment.
5. Use the Restroom Beforehand
It’s a simple but important step—especially if you plan to fully relax during your session. A quick visit to the restroom ensures you’re comfortable for the duration of your treatment.
During Your Massage: Creating the Experience That’s Right for You
Once your therapist reviews your intake form and checks in on your goals for the session, they will guide you to your massage suite. From there, they will leave the room to allow you to undress to your comfort level and lie on the table, under the sheet and blanket provided.
You are always professionally draped. Only the area being worked on will be uncovered, ensuring your modesty and comfort at all times.
Talk to Us—Or Don’t. It’s Up to You.
One of the most important things to remember is that this is your session, and it’s completely okay to express your preferences during the massage. That might include:
- Asking for more or less pressure
- Requesting extra time on a specific area
- Letting us know if something doesn’t feel quite right
- Sharing whether you’d prefer silence or light conversation
Some guests enjoy talking during their massage, while others prefer quiet relaxation. There’s no wrong answer—just let your therapist know what feels best for you.
Adjust the Environment as Needed
We customize every aspect of your massage to meet your comfort needs. If something in the room isn’t to your liking, your therapist will be happy to make adjustments:
- Room temperature
- Music volume or type
- Lighting preferences
- Aromatherapy or scent sensitivities
This is your time to feel at ease in your body and in your environment. Don’t hesitate to speak up—we welcome your feedback.
After Your Massage: Taking the Benefits With You
Once your session ends, your therapist will leave the room to allow you to dress privately. Take your time getting up from the table. It’s not uncommon to feel a little lightheaded or deeply relaxed immediately afterward—that’s a sign your body is entering a restorative state.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Massage therapy stimulates circulation and supports your body’s natural detoxification processes. That’s why we always recommend drinking plenty of water after your session to help flush out any released toxins and prevent soreness.
Water also helps support:
- Muscle recovery
- Reduced inflammation
- Proper hydration of joints and soft tissues
Consider keeping a water bottle with you for the rest of the day and avoid alcohol or heavy meals directly after your session, if possible.
Common First-Time Questions (And Our Honest Answers)
Do I have to be completely undressed?
No. You should undress to your level of comfort. Many guests choose to fully undress, while others prefer to keep undergarments on. You will always be properly draped, and only the area being worked on will be uncovered. Your comfort is our top priority.
Is it okay to fall asleep during my massage?
Absolutely! Many guests drift off during their session, and it’s a compliment to your therapist that you feel that relaxed. If you snore—no worries. We’ve heard it all.
Will I be sore afterward?
Depending on the type and intensity of the massage, some mild soreness is normal—especially if you had deep tissue work or it’s your first massage in a while. Drinking water and stretching gently afterward can help alleviate soreness.
Can I talk to my therapist during the session?
Yes. You’re welcome to ask questions, provide feedback, or enjoy quiet time. Just let us know what you prefer, and we’ll follow your lead.
